Uke Chord Solos
Chord solos are a type of arrangement in which the melody and harmony are played at the same time, allowing the ukulele function as a solo instrument. They are a lot of fun to play and make great “party pieces” to add to your repertoire. Join Steve Boisen of The Barnkickers as he teaches you how to play an easy solo piece and presents some of his own arrangements for you to learn. He’ll also offer tips on how to create your own solos and provide a list of resources where you can find more pieces arranged for the ukulele. The material is all presented in tablature, so no music reading is required. This workshop is open to all levels, but attendees will get the most from this workshop if they can already play basic chords on their ukulele

Fingerstyle Uke, Soloing and Chunking
In this three-pronged workshop for beginning to intermediate players, Uke
Jon Prown, Dominator, and Seeso will inspire the uke maestro lurking within you. Uke Jon Prown will look at the seemingly mysterious but surprisingly
simple relationship between melodies and chords. Playing fingerstyle uke is actually within the grasp of us all. The key is to understand how the melody line and backing chords in any song compliment one another. This session also will explore alternative chord variations and inversions as a way of spicing up both your rhythm and fingerstyle playing. Beginners and Intermediate level players will benefit from this session. Have you ever wanted to take a solo at your local uke jam but weren’t
quite sure where to start? This can be a very stressful situation for beginners as well as intermediate level players. Well, fear not fellow ukers, Dominator will demonstrate that basic, yet melodically pleasing solos can be crafted by looking at the notes within the chords, alternate chord voicings (inversions as presented in Jon’s segment) as well as the execution of simple two note voicings referred to as “double stops”. The objective is for you to become familiar with the concepts presented
and leave with a reference document, “Stress Free Soloing,” that will allow you to re-visit and learn the material at your own pace. The ultimate goal is to provide some tools and techniques to allow beginning as well as intermediate players open the door to constructing and/or improvising basic solos. Does the “chunking” technique make you up-chuck your lunch all over your
uke? Let Seeso break it down to its most basic elements for you. During this portion of the workshop, both left-handed and right-handed chunking techniques will be taught. From a simple “Bo Diddley” beat to more complex funk rhythms, Seeso will help you to explore the percussive possibilities of the ukulele |
